Historic Preservation Commission

Background and Purpose

The Historic Preservation Commission is a seven member commission of citizens appointed from throughout the city, with professional training or a special interest in history, architecture, archeology, or historic preservation. They work with the City’s Historic Preservation Specialist to identify grants, historic preservation outreach opportunities, and areas of the city that could benefit from historic surveys or historic rehabilitation tax credits. The Commission meets quarterly.

In 2022 the Commission won a national award for their Designing Decatur booklet. This publication showcased twenty historic sites in our city, in celebration of our 200th anniversary.
