Voting in a Municipal Election

Registering to Vote:

Voter registration forms may picked up from the City Clerk’s office at 402 Lee Street NE, Decatur, AL 35601. You also can register to vote online at the Secretary of State’s website .

If you are unsure of your voter information, contact the Board of Registrars for the county where you reside.

General Information:

Municipal elections are held quadrennially on the fourth Tuesday in August. The next City election for the office of Mayor and for five City Council positions will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

A run-off election, if necessary, will be held on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, and the organizational meeting for the new administration will be held on Monday, November 3, 2025.

Voters must be registered a minimum of 14 days prior to the election. If you have moved or had a name change, please update your information prior to this deadline. Registration and updates may be done on-line at www.alabamavotes.gov or forms may be obtained.

Poll hours are from 7:00 A.M. through 7:00 P.M. View district polling locations.

Municipal Absentee Ballot Applications must be returned to the City Clerk at Decatur City Hall:

Only ONE Absentee Application per envelope and a photocopy of proper ID, as required.

Important Absentee Deadlines:

  • Last Day to Apply for an Absentee Ballot by Mail August 19, 2025
  • Last Day to Apply for an Absentee Ballot In-Person August 21, 2025
  • Last Day to Hand-Deliver an Absentee Ballot August 25, 2025 by 5:00pm*
  • Last Day for Election Manager to Receive Absentee Ballots by Mail, Noon on August 26, 2025

*Only the Voter can “Hand-Deliver” an application or ballot

A voter can apply for and submit an emergency absentee ballot if he or she:

  • Is required by their employer to be unavailable to vote in the polls;
  • Is a caregiver of a person who requires emergency treatment within five days of the election; or
  • Has a family member to the 2nd degree of kinship who dies within five days of the election. §17-11-3(d) as amended by ACT 2019-509 11-3(d) as amended by ACT 2019-509.
  • Last Day, August 25, 2025, for voter to apply for an emergency absentee ballot 17-11-3 (e)(2)

If an absentee ballot is returned by mail, it must be postmarked by August 24 and received by noon the day of the election.
