Think Mardi Gras Started in New Orleans? Alabama Says Otherwise.
Most people associate Mardi Gras with New Orleans. But the first organized Mardi Gras celebration in the United States took place in Alabama.
Mobile began celebrating Mardi Gras in 1703, decades before the tradition reached Louisiana. Over time, communities across the state adopted the celebration and shaped it to reflect their own culture and traditions.
That includes Decatur.
As a Tennessee River city, Decatur has long been a place where people gather. River towns historically served as centers for travel, trade, and community events. Celebrations followed naturally. Today’s Mardi Gras events carry that same spirit forward by bringing people together through food, music, art, and shared experiences downtown.
Decatur’s approach to Mardi Gras has developed its own identity. Events like the Carnegie Carnival highlight creativity, local businesses, families, and downtown energy. The celebration centers on community and connection, giving residents a chance to enjoy time together in a way that reflects the city’s character.
“Mardi Gras has deep roots in Alabama, and it’s fun to see how communities like Decatur have made it their own,” said Mayor Kent Lawrence. “Events like Carnegie Carnival bring people downtown, support local businesses, and give families a chance to enjoy time together. That’s what makes it special here.”
The City of Decatur Parks and Recreation Department works alongside community partners to help create spaces where residents and visitors can gather and celebrate together.
While Mardi Gras may look different from city to city, the heart of the tradition remains the same. Communities coming together to celebrate the season. In Decatur, that tradition continues along the Tennessee River, shaped by local history and shared experiences.
