Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course Renovation Complete at Jack Allen Recreation Complex

Jan 8, 2026

The City of Decatur has completed renovations to the Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course at the Jack Allen Recreation Complex, improving safety, playability, and navigation for players.

The project primarily focused on upgrades to holes 11 through 18, including new concrete tee pads, refurbished targets, updated course signage, improved walkways, and the removal of boulders and hazards. The improvements respond to long-standing player feedback and reflect the continued growth of disc golf across north Alabama.

“This renovation shows how we keep investing in spaces that bring people together and keep Decatur moving forward,” said Mayor Kent Lawrence. “Quality recreation matters, and this course is part of that bigger picture.”

Renovations were completed by Hall of Fame Course Design, led by Disc Golf Hall of Fame inductee Lavone Wolfe. Wolfe originally installed the Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course in 2012 and has designed or built more than 78 disc golf courses throughout the Southeast.

The total project cost was $114,312. The city received a $100,000 grant from Alabama Mountains, Rivers and Valleys, with the remaining funds provided through the City of Decatur’s Community Development grant-matching budget.

“These upgrades make the course safer, easier to follow, and more fun to play,” explained Parks and Recreation Director Hunter Allen. “They reflect what players asked for and what the course needed.”

City officials say the renovation supports a wide range of recreational interests and strengthens Decatur’s quality-of-life amenities. In addition to Flying Dragon, Decatur also offers disc golf courses at Central Park and Rhodes Ferry Park.
