Decatur Parks and Recreation Launches its First Spring Activity Guide
The Decatur Parks and Recreation Department has released its first-ever Spring Activity Guide, providing residents with a single place to explore programs, events, facilities, and outdoor opportunities across the city this season.
The new guide provides a comprehensive overview of Parks and Recreation’s offerings, including youth sports and wellness programs, special events, outdoor recreation, and upcoming facility improvements.
“This guide helps residents see the full picture of what Parks and Recreation means in Decatur,” Parks and Recreation Director Hunter Allen said in the guide’s opening letter. “Our parks are where families gather, traditions grow, and community happens.”
A Look At What’s Inside
The Spring Activity Guide highlights opportunities for residents of all ages and interests, including:
- Youth and adult sports leagues, including girls’ flag football and adult softball, along with local soccer, baseball, and softball programs.
- Aquatics and wellness programs at the Aquadome Recreation Center, including lap swimming, water aerobics, and swim team opportunities.
- Senior fitness and activity programming, from exercise classes and line dancing to social events and gardening programs.
- Inclusive recreation and Special Olympics programming, reinforcing access to recreation for all abilities.
- Outdoor recreation and trail experiences, including hiking, biking, and walking opportunities throughout the city.
- Community events and seasonal traditions include Concerts in the Park, the Alabama Jubilee Hot Air Balloon Classic, and the Daikin Festival.
The guide also introduces the department’s new DASH program portal, which allows residents to register for leagues, programs, and memberships online in one centralized location.
Parks That Tell Decatur’s Story
In addition to program listings, the guide highlights the history and character of Decatur’s parks, including Delano Park, Morgan County’s oldest continuous public green space. The feature explores the park’s historic design, ongoing restoration efforts, and its role as a gathering place for generations of residents.
Featured park sections also highlight community favorites such as Jessie Lewis Smith Park and Frazier Park, underscoring their role in strengthening neighborhood connections and creating welcoming spaces for families and visitors.
Looking Ahead
The guide outlines several ongoing Parks and Recreation projects, including progress on the new recreation center, renovations at the Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course, and the upcoming Point Mallard Event Center, all aimed at expanding recreation opportunities citywide.
City leaders say the guide represents a new way of connecting residents with the spaces and programs already available throughout Decatur.
The Spring Activity Guide is available now online, and residents are encouraged to explore new programs, attend events, and spend time outdoors this season.
