City of Decatur Pauses Recycling Operations Following Equipment Failure

Feb 26, 2026

The City of Decatur has suspended recycling operations effective immediately following a critical equipment failure on Thursday at the City’s recycling processing facility.

A mechanical failure of the facility’s baler system requires repair by the manufacturer. Repairs could take up to one month, which represents a worst-case estimate.

City staff have contacted the manufacturer and are working to secure the necessary parts to restore service as quickly as possible.

What Residents Need to Know

  • Recycling collection routes will not operate during this period.
  • All City recycling drop-off locations are temporarily closed.
  • Residents may place recyclable materials in their regular household garbage or hold them until service resumes.

“We know recycling is important to our community,” Recycling Program Director Wanda Tyler said. “While this temporary suspension is unfortunate, we are actively working with the manufacturer to complete repairs and restore service as soon as possible.”

The City has notified municipal partners that utilize Decatur’s recycling processing facility. The City cannot speak to operational decisions that those municipalities may make during this period.

Recycling remains a priority for Decatur’s long-term sustainability efforts. Updates will be provided as repair timelines are confirmed.
