We Asked. You Answered. Here Is What Happens Next.

Feb 26, 2026

The City of Decatur received 689 responses to its 2026 Community Survey, helping shape priorities for the next one to three years.

After reviewing the results, Decatur’s Mayor and City Council are aligning on next steps for infrastructure, traffic coordination, public safety, and responsible economic growth.

Survey responses show road conditions and congestion remain top concerns. Public safety and economic opportunity also ranked highly among the selected priorities.

More than half of the respondents reported satisfaction with City services. When asked whether Decatur is moving in the right direction, 38.2 percent said they were unsure. City leaders say that response reflects individuals who are watching for continued progress and measurable improvements.

“Our community made it clear that safety, infrastructure, and economic opportunity matter most,” Mayor Kent Lawrence and the Decatur City Council said in a joint statement. “We are unified in focusing on those fundamentals and delivering visible results across our city.”

What Was Prioritized

Participants selected up to three issues that matter most right now. The most frequently selected were:

  • Public safety — 37.7 percent
  • Traffic and congestion — 36.4 percent
  • Jobs and economic growth — 32.2 percent
  • Quality of life and events — 27.7 percent
  • Streets and sidewalks — 24.8 percent

Infrastructure-related concerns were consistent throughout the survey.

What Happens Next

Based on survey feedback, City leadership has identified several immediate focus areas:

  • Increasing visibility around resurfacing and infrastructure updates.
  • Providing ongoing transportation and traffic coordination information.
  • Reinforcing public safety efforts through continued support of police leadership, community engagement initiatives, and visible neighborhood presence.
  • Continuing economic development efforts that support long-term competitiveness.
  • Communicating progress clearly and consistently.

“Our community is focused on fundamentals,” the joint statement continued. “This survey provides a clear benchmark as we measure progress moving forward.”
