City of Decatur Mourns Loss of Longtime Employee

Jul 20, 2026

The City of Decatur is mourning the death of longtime Parks and Recreation Department employee Chris Seal, who died after suffering critical injuries while responding to storm damage Sunday night.

Seal and another City employee were clearing a fallen tree limb from the roadway near the intersection of Fourth Avenue Northwest and Third Street Northwest when a second limb fell and struck them. Emergency personnel transported Seal for medical treatment, but he later died from his injuries.

Seal served the City of Decatur and its residents for 21 years.

“Chris was a valued member of our City family who dedicated more than two decades of his life to serving this community,” Mayor Kent Lawrence said. “We are heartbroken by his loss, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and coworkers.”

“This is a devastating loss for our entire organization, especially those who worked alongside Chris each day,” Lawrence said. “We will support his family and our employees as they grieve.”

The City is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident and will release additional information when appropriate.
