Decatur Police Department Reactivates Bicycle Unit to Enhance Community Safety and Event Response
The Decatur Police Department is proud to announce the reactivation of its Bicycle Unit, a proactive initiative designed to enhance public safety, strengthen community engagement, and improve operational effectiveness during special events and high-traffic gatherings. Eight highly motivated officers will man the unit equipped with Recon Interceptor E-Bikes.
The Bicycle Unit provides officers with a highly mobile, visible, and approachable presence throughout the city. Unlike traditional patrol vehicles, bicycle officers can quickly navigate crowded areas, access spaces that are difficult to reach by vehicle, and respond more efficiently in dynamic environments.
“This unit represents a significant step forward in how we serve our community,” said Chief Torry Mack. “Our bicycle officers are not only a visible deterrent to crime, but they also create more opportunities for positive interaction with residents and visitors.”
The Bicycle Unit is especially effective during large-scale events such as parades, 5K runs, festivals, and community gatherings held at Point Mallard, and other venues across the city. In these settings, officers on bicycles are able to:
– Move seamlessly through dense crowds
– Provide rapid response to incidents or emergencies
– Enhance public safety without disrupting the flow of events
– Engage directly with citizens in a more personal and approachable way
The flexibility and efficiency of bicycle patrols make them a valuable asset for event security and community-oriented policing. Officers assigned to the unit receive specialized training to ensure they are equipped to handle a variety of situations while maintaining a high level of professionalism and service.
The Decatur Police Department remains committed to innovative strategies that improve safety, build trust, and support the vibrant community events that make Decatur a great place to live, work, and visit.
