City of Decatur Releases 2026 Planned Road Resurfacing List
The City of Decatur has released its 2026 planned road resurfacing list, with projects scheduled in Districts One through Five as part of the City’s ongoing investment in street maintenance and infrastructure.
Residents can also explore all planned resurfacing locations through an interactive map available on the City’s website.
The annual resurfacing program is designed to improve drivability, extend pavement life, and address street conditions across the city in a strategic and fiscally responsible way.
Mayor Kent Lawrence said maintaining streets remains one of the most visible and important services the City provides.
“Residents expect safe, reliable streets, and this resurfacing plan is part of our continued effort to invest in the infrastructure people use every day,” Lawrence said. “This work is planned across all five districts and reflects a citywide commitment to long-term maintenance.”
How Roads are Selected
Decatur maintains a large street network, and resurfacing decisions are made through a structured planning process rather than on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Resurfacing is not a one-size-fits-all process,” said City Engineer Carl Prewitt. “We look at how a road is holding up, how much it is used, and how it connects to the rest of the network to make sure we are prioritizing the right streets each year.”
City staff evaluates a range of factors when building the annual resurfacing list, including:
- pavement condition
- traffic volume
- connectivity and network importance
- maintenance history
- coordination with utility or drainage work
- available funding
Because of the size of the street system and the cost of resurfacing, not every road can be addressed in a single year. The City uses its annual resurfacing program to make steady progress across the network while continuing to evaluate future needs in every district.
