New Calhoun Athletic Complex Could Anchor Growth in Northeast Decatur
A new partnership between the City of Decatur and Calhoun Community College could bring a collegiate sports complex to Northeast Decatur, with the City Council set to consider the first step Monday.
The proposed project would relocate Calhoun’s baseball and softball programs to a new site near 10th Avenue Northeast, positioning the area for increased activity, investment, and community use. The project also aligns with Calhoun’s plans for nearby student housing, creating a more active and connected area.
The resolution before Council authorizes Mayor Kent Lawrence to negotiate a final agreement with the Alabama Community College System and Decatur Utilities to advance the project.
City officials say the development would serve multiple public benefits, including economic growth, expanded recreation, and improvements to a key entrance corridor.
Mayor Kent Lawrence said the project aligns with the City’s long-term vision.
“We are focused on projects that create energy and opportunity. This has the potential to bring new life to Northeast Decatur while supporting Calhoun’s continued growth.”
As part of the proposal, the City would invest up to $3 million to acquire the property, relocate utilities, and prepare the site for development.
The complex is expected to create a more accessible venue for student-athletes and attract residents and visitors to the area for games and events.
Final design plans and timelines would be developed following Council approval and completion of a formal agreement.
