City of Decatur Shares Scam Awareness Notice to Protect Residents and Businesses

Feb 11, 2026

The City of Decatur is notifying residents and businesses about a scam reported in other Alabama communities in which individuals posing as city employees have been contacting residents and businesses.

This scam has not been reported in Decatur. City officials are sharing the information as a preventative step to help residents and applicants recognize suspicious activity.

In reported cases, scammers used publicly available information from planning or zoning meeting materials to contact property owners or applicants. The messages appeared legitimate and referenced real projects, permits, or grant opportunities. Recipients were then asked to submit fees or payments.

The City of Decatur does not request payment via unsolicited emails and does not require wire transfers.

Residents and businesses who receive messages requesting money or personal information should not respond or send payment. Instead, they should contact the City department directly using the phone number or email listed on the City of Decatur’s official website.

By sharing information early, the City hopes to prevent scams before they occur and help protect the community.
