Decatur City Council to Honor K-9 Bane on His Retirement
The Decatur City Council is set to approve a resolution Monday night recognizing the retirement of K-9 Bane, a longtime partner of the Decatur Police Department who has served the city with distinction for more than seven years.
Bane joined the department in October 2018 at just 11 months old and was partnered with Officer Julie Reynolds. The team completed 13 weeks of intensive K-9 training with the Huntsville Police Department, covering patrol work, explosives detection, and foundational obedience while forming a strong working bond.
During his career, Bane maintained dual certification in Explosives Detection and Patrol through the United States Police Canine Association. He played a key role in keeping the community safe and was known for his focus, drive, and reliability in the field.
Due to age and health-related limitations, Bane is retiring from active service, effective February 3, 2026. He is more than eight years old, and his ability to perform the demanding duties of police K-9 work has naturally declined.
As part of an approved resolution, custody of Bane will transfer to Officer Reynolds, who will care for him during his retirement. The City appreciates Bane’s service and recognizes the important role he has played in protecting Decatur residents.
After years of dedicated work, Bane can begin a well-earned retirement, trading patrols and training for rest, family time, and his favorite tug toy.
