SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for enforcing local, state and federal laws and ordinances, patrolling, training, surveillance, public relations, apprehension of law violators, and preparing related paperwork and reports. This position is considered a full-time Police Officer in accordance with the Alabama Police Officer Standards and Training Commission. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma from an accredited school, or GED equivalent is required.
  • Possession of valid Driver’s License issued by the State of Alabama.
  • Ability to successfully complete all phases of the selection process for Police Officers as established by the City of Decatur. These include, but are not limited to: Written Examination, Physical Agility Test, Oral Interview Assessment, Background Screening and Polygraph Examination.
  • Ability to successfully obtain the State mandated certification from the Alabama Peace Officer Standard and Training Commission.
  • Applicants without an Associate’s Degree or higher: Alabama Peace Officer Standard and Training Commission requires successful completion of a Basic Abilities Test (BAT) for any applicant applying for certification to the academy that has not already attained an Associate’s Degree or higher. This test is administered at the applicants’ expense.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, attend to tasks without distractions, reason effectively, use effective judgment, maintain alertness and awareness, perform multiple concurrent tasks, and exercise memory. Must be proficient in the English language.
  • Physical tolerance to adapt and perform under adverse and stressful conditions.

NOTICE

The City of Decatur is in the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA), currently all employees with Tier 1 retirement benefit eligibility. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, vacation, sick leave, holidays, life insurance, long term disability, tuition assistance, and an Employee Assistance Program. Decatur Police Department has a rotating 12-hour shift with 3 days on and 3 days off.

Competitive written examination is required for this position (for new hire candidates, not lateral transfers). Eligible candidates will receive notification of scheduled examination location and time via EMAIL.
